  1. Who is your favorite literary character?

    It’s a tie between Huckleberry Finn and Alice in Wonderland. In fact, I think they would make a great team.

  2. If you could make a cameo appearance in a show, what show would it be?

    “Mad Men”, but at the age I was in the era the show is set. I would have been the same age as Sally Draper, so a walk-on as a classmate of hers would be perfect.

  3. What is your greatest fear?

    Being asked to choose between saving the passengers of a runaway train or a baby crawling on the tracks, for real.

  4. One thing you could eat for the rest of your life?

    The Reuben, a great sandwich that contains most of the major food groups. Also the name of the cartooning industry’s highest award, but, of course, you can’t eat that.

  5. Favorite movie? Worst movie?

    Sheesh. Favorites include: “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “Harvey”, “Young Frankenstein”, “Fargo”, “The Haunting” (the original), “Aliens” and Mystery in the Wax Museum” from 1933 .

    As for worst, “Plan 9 from Outer Space” wins in the so-bad-it’s-good category, but Gus Van Sant’s shot-by-shot remake of “Psycho” gets points for pointlessness.

  6. If you could come back as a historical figure/anyone, who would it be?

    I’d come back as H. P. Lovecraft, assuming I could take better care of my health and inject some humor into his stories.

  8. What is your motto?

    A man should act as the agent of his own good luck.

  9. What song do you have on repeat?

    None at present, but I used to get Randy Newman’s “Political Science” stuck in my head, a catchy tune about nuclear Armageddon.

  10. Ultimate vacation?

    The Village Patrick McGoohan was trapped in on “The Prisoner”, the one place not overrun by tourists. I grew up near Colonial Williamsburg.

  11. What do you consider your greatest achievement?

    Walking away from a safe job that would have sucked out my soul over the course of decades.

  12. What is your favorite cartoon/comic character?

    Pogo. ‘Nuff said.

  13. If you weren't drawing, what would you be doing?


  14. My biggest pet peeve is...

    People with deeply-held, passionate opinions concerning things they know little about.

  15. Who do you admire/who is your role model?

    Walt Kelly, for both his sense of humor and his deep love of humanity, warts and all.

  16. When was the last time you laughed really hard?

    Listening to the commentary track of a “Futurama” DVD.

  17. One thing you couldn’t live without?


  18. Guilty pleasure?

    Superhero movies.

  19. What is your greatest extravagance?

    Hardback reprints of old comic books.

  20. The best advice you've ever gotten?

    “It is better to be alone than to wish you were.”

    That the middle name of Maynard G. Krebs was really Gilligan.
