About John Newcombe
In addition to writing the Zack Hill comic strip, John Newcombe is an award-winning filmmaker. He is currently working on a documentary about jazz legend and film composer Lalo Schifrin (Mission Impossible, Dirty Harry, Bullitt, Cool Hand Luke). In 2011 his documentary “Winnetka Story”, a history of Chicago’s North Shore, won the Special Achievement Award from the Illinois Association of Museums, and his documentary “Rancho La Canada” , a history of the Los Angeles foothill community, won a Commendation Award from the Los Angeles City Hall. He also wrote and directed the feature comedy “Best Man in Grass Creek” which was an official entry at a dozen film festivals where it won three different “Best Comedy” awards. His student film “Lovestruck” won a number of awards including an Academy Award for Student Films. John lives with his wife Frances, son Jonah and two dogs in the foothills above Los Angeles.
